Temple (0-2) vs Maryland (2-0)

Time: 12 PM

Favorite: Maryland -16.5

Total: 53.5

Pick: Maryland

Flashes Game Notes

Maryland is a 16.5 point favorite at William Hill and for good reason; big wins over Texas and Bowling Green has given plenty of folks confidence this team can score big and defend when they need to.

Temple ranks #116 (out of 130) in offense averaging 303 total yards per game. The culprit? Turnovers. Temple has turned the ball over five times in their first two games. Senior QB Frank Nutile has thrown four interceptions and has been sacked three times. Senior RB Ryquell Armstead has been okay but hasn’t found the end zone yet.

Maryland ranks #41 in total offense averaging 486 total yards per game. Most of that comes via the ground (293 yards). Senior RB Ty Johnson and Sophomore RB Tayon Fleet-Davis lead the way for the Terapins. Freshman QB Kasim Hill has thrown for nearly 400 yards, two TD’s without an interception.

The Temple defense is ranked #91 in defense allowing 416 total yards per game. This defense allows 264.5 yards via the air and another 151.5 on the ground. Temple leads the nation in blocked kicks with three. Opposing teams are a combined 17-33 on third down conversions.

The Maryland defense comes into Saturday’s game as the #24 ranked defense in NCAA Football with 563 total yards. They allow an average of 203 yards via the air and 78.5 rushing yards per game. Maryland opponents have converted only seven of 29 third downs this season.

Florida State (1-1) vs Syracuse (2-0)

12 PM

Favorite Florida State -3

Total 68.5 Points

Pick: Florida State -3

Flashes Game Notes

Florida State is the favorite here but not by much. Big total expected because neither of these NCAA Football teams play very good defense. The Seminoles rank #93 in total yards allowed and Syracuse is ranked #103.

Don’t see these defenses doing all that much to stop each other, do you?

Syracuse has the #34 ranked offense in NCAA Football. They average 233 yards via the air and 274.5 on the ground.

Florida State has the #94 ranked offense. They average 276.5 passing yards per game and 114 rushing yards.

Both of these teams struggle against teams who throw the ball. Florida State allows 341 passing yards per game. Syracuse allows 313 passing yards per game. The advantage should go to Syracuse but they really aren’t all that good at passing the football.

Florida State is a top 20 defense against the rush. Their battle with the Syracuse two pronged attack of QB Eric Dungey and RB Moe Neal should be fun to see and probably where the game will be won or lost.

Vanderbilt (2-0) vs Notre Dame (2-0)

2:30 PM

Favorite: Notre Dame 13.5

Total: 51.5 Points

Pick: Notre Dame -13.5

Flashes Game Notes

Notre Dame is ranked #8 and Vanderbilt is the #23 ranked team in the country. This has the makings of a great Week Three matchup.

Vanderbilt has the #19th ranked defense in total yards allowed (272) and Notre Dame ranks #48 allowing 328 yards. Let’s also be sure and remember Notre Dame has played Michigan and Ball State; Vandy has played Middle Tennessee and Nevada.

That’s where it begins and ends for me. Nothing against Middle Tennessee or Nevada but the Notre Dame jayvee team might have better athletes.

The best preview of the dozen or so I have read can be found at One Foot Down.

Alabama (2-0) vs Mississippi (2-0)

7 PM

Alabama -22 Points

Total: 70.5 points

Pick: Alabama -22

Flashes Game Notes

I’m not a big trend guy here but Ole Miss is just 3-8 ATS in their last 11 home games. For some reason that means something to me.

The other thing about Ole Miss that stands out is how many points this undefeated football team allows; 34 per game. That’s a LOT of points to allow for an undefeated NCAA Football team.

Alabama is allowing just 10 points per game. Their Achilles heel, if they have one, is their passing defense. They allow 235 yards per game via the air but when teams are playing catch up its understandable for a team like Alabama to give up some passing yards.

That Achilles heel is what Ole Miss will hope to attack. Ole Miss ranks #2 in the nation averaging 407 passing yards per game. Senior QB Jordan Ta’amu has been nothing short of spectacular this season completing 45 of his 65 attempts for 784 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions.

I think it’s going to be an entertaining game between two teams with good QB’s. Hopefully Ta’amu and Tide QB Tue Tagovailoa put on a great show because I am planning on watching lol.

I suppose a case could be made for playing the over here. I’m not going to talk you out of it either because it looks like a good play. I happen to be of the opinion Alabama covers the 22 by half time and rolls Tide right over this Mississippi team.

USC (1-1) vs Texas (1-1)

8:00 PM

Favorite Texas -3.5

Total: 47 Points

Pick: USC +3.5

 Flashes Game Notes

We have two teams who both have had some ups and downs in this very young season. Texas hasn’t covered the spread in either of their games and neither has USC.

Oy vey.

Texas has the #60 ranked offense in NCAA Football. They are averaging 442 yards per game and are scoring 28.5 points per game. 250 yards via the air and 191.5 rushing yards. Texas also averages 28.5 points per game playing the likes of Maryland and Tulsa.

USC let me down big time in their season opener with UNLV. USC has the 75th ranked offense and are averaging 417 total yards per game. They also average 250 passing yards and 166.5 rushing yards per game. USC also scores 23 points per game against the likes of UNLV and Stanford.

The Longhorns defense is ranked #53 in total yards per game (380). They allow 214 passing yards and 166 rushing yards per game. Texas also allows 27.5 points per game this season.

A very good injury report for this game can be found at Barking Carnival.

Oy vey…….
