Flashes Game Notes

UCLA vs Oklahoma

The Chip Kelly era didn’t start off all that great as they lost at home to Cincinnati. QB Wilson Speight wound up getting hurt and his status at the time of this writing remains day-to-day. Dorian Thompson-Robinson replaced Speight and threw for only 54 yards. Bruins RB Bolu Olorunfunmi rushed for only 13 yards last week and if the Bruins have any chance against Oklahoma he’d better rush for 100 yards or better. Against Cincinnati the Bruins allowed 193 rushing yards and just 110 passing yards. The Sooners CRUSHED Florida Atlantic behind Rodney Anderson’s 100 rushing yards on just five carries. Sooners QB Kyler Murray was damn good completing nine of 11 passes and throwing for 209 yards and two TD’s. The Sooners allowed 193 passing yards to Florida Atlantic and a healthy Speight might be able to exploit this chink in the Sooners armor.

Michigan State vs Arizona State

Michigan State came out flat against Utah State and damn near lost to the Aggies. Since MSU has a history of strange opening day games I will leave that squeaker alone. QB Bryan Lewerke threw for nearly 300 yards and two touchdowns to keep from getting upset. I was more concerned about the Spartans defense and their inability to put pressure on the QB. That could pose a big problem against ASU and might give Sun Devils QB Manny Wilkins some added confidence. The Spartans had two interceptions in their season opener but they didn’t have to face the likes of N’Keal Harry and he could give the Spartan secondary fits. The Aggies recorded nine sacks in their season opener but the Spartan’s offensive line ain’t the University of Texas San Antonio.

Maryland vs Bowling Green

Maryland won their season opener over #23 Texas and Bowling Green lost theirs on the road against Oregon. The Ducks KILLED Bowling Green via the air and that might get Maryland QB Kasim Hill excited. Maryland giving up 405 total yards might be a concern but Texas ain’t Bowling Green. Bowling Green RB Andrew Clair rushed for triple digits against the Ducks and WR Scott Miller caught 13 balls for 166 yards and two touchdowns so keeping them in check will be key to this game. The Total has gone over in each of Bowling Green’s previous five games so that might come into play on Saturday.

Rutgers vs Ohio State

Both teams are coming off huge wins but that is probably the only thing these two football teams have in common. Rutgers Freshman QB Artur Sitkowski was picked off three times by a Texas State defense that looks like a Jayvee High School defense compared to Ohio State. OSU QB Dwayne Haskins threw for five touchdowns against an Oregon State defense comparable to Texas State. This one should be interesting for about five minutes or so before OSU turns on the burners in front of their home crowd and covers the 35 point spread.

California vs BYU

Cal and their QB carousel head to Provo to take on BYU in what should be an awfully interesting football game. Cal used all three of their QB’s and used at least two of them on several of their drives last Saturday in their win over North Carolina. The Cal defense looked damn good with four picks. If this game remains close, and I think it will, look for Cal RB Patrick Laird to be the cornerstone of the Cal offense. BYU beating Arizona surprised a bunch of folks, including me. RB Squally Canada is a nice back and their QB Tanner Magnum did a good job keeping his composure against that Arizona defense.

USC vs Stanford

This should be a nice PAC-12 matchup between two of the nations best football teams. The J.T. Daniels era at USC has begun and depending on who you ask it went very well to just okay. Either way he is their signal caller and he threw for nearly 300 yards, one TD and a pick against a halfways decent UNLV defense. The USC defense allowed 308 of their 404 total yards on the ground and that bodes well for Stanford RB Bryce Love. Love rushed for over 2100 yards last season but is coming off a miserable 18 carry, 29 yard day against San Diego State. Look for QB A.J. Costello to have another big day (332 yards and 4 TD’s against San Diego State) against the Trojan defense. CB Alijah Holder is questionable for Saturday.

 Florida International vs Old Dominion

Conference U.S.A checks in and we have what could either be a really good ballgame or a blowout on Saturday. The Florida International defense returned just four starters and it showed in their loss last week to Indiana. The FIU offense sputtered also but Indiana has a BIG 10 defense so that was to be expected. Fortunately for FIU Old Dominion has a much weaker defense and maybe that helps out RB Anthony Jones. Old Dominion returns 16 starters but that didn’t help much as they got destroyed in Week One by Liberty. It was a tough loss to a good football team and I expect these 16 returning starters will get their act together beginning with FIU on Saturday.

Memphis vs Navy

The line has spiked to Memphis -6 from its original Memphis laying 3.5 points. I’m a fan of the Memphis Tigers but spotting most NCAA D1 Football teams is a bad idea. But in this case and while I would prefer the -3.5 I feel confident after watching Navy get their asses kicked that they can’t hang with Memphis. I mean Hawaii hung 59 points on this Navy defense last week. Mostly via the air as they made Hawaii QB Cole McDonald look like Joe Montana. I think Memphis QB Brady White is better than McDonald and he’s going to light the Midshipmen secondary up Saturday afternoon!!!

Colorado vs Nebraska

Nebraska is now giving -3.5 points at home. That’s good to see. The lower the better because I don’t want to have to actually consider Colorado this week. They did beat the stuffing out of Colorado State and do have a game under their belts. Let’s not forget how fucking bad the Cornhusker defense was last season; Minnesota, Penn State and Iowa all scored 50 plus points against them. And not being able to see them play I wonder if new Head Coach Scott Frost has actually fixed anything. There are worse ideas other than giving -3.5 points at home to a team you don’t think is good. Plus I think Nebraska gives Colorado the beating they were planning on giving to the Akron Zips in what now will be Scott Brooks home debut.

Clemson vs Texas A&M

Dabo Sweeney vs Jimbo Fisher. Some folks think Clemson will win the National Championship. The way they steamrolled Furman in their season opener gave those folks some ammo. They do look good but is Furman on the same level as Texas A&M? The Aggies smashed Northwestern State and what I think we have are these two football teams playing their first “real” game this season. And if that’s the case we have to decide if Clemson is two touchdowns better than Texas A&M is. I think the Clemson defense and their front line is superior to anything the Aggies can throw at them. Or I should say run at them because the Aggies rushed for 503 yards against Northwestern State. Still doesn’t matter. Clemson also has not one but TWO very talented QB’s that he can’t decide between the two on who to start. Clemson is loaded and the Aggies are in for a long afternoon at home.
