Flashes Match Notes
Naomi Osaka vs Lesia Tsurenko
If you had told me prior to this tournament that Naomi Osaka would be playing Lesia Tsurenko in the quarterfinals of the US Open I would have laughed at you. But here we are and here they are and this should be a very entertaining match. This is the first time both ladies have reached a Grand Slam Quarterfinal and the first meeting between the two combatants. Neither of these ladies are the biggest servers on the WTA tour but Tsurenko has the better one and should be able to break Osaka. It’s clear that Osaka is content hitting big balls and scrambling and that might be difficult. Especially if the temperature soars in the high 80’s to lower 90’s as predicted.
Carla Suarez Navarro vs Madison Keys
Suarez Navarro dismantled Maria Sharapova in round four and was impressive in doing so. That young lady flies around the court and just by looking at her she has much more power than you might think she has. And that has worked for her throughout her career and especially so during this tournament. Wednesday against Keys will be different for her because Keys knocks the shit out of the ball. In four matches Keys has ripped 118 winners and 26 aces. That’s grown folks tennis right there. The fun part is this; these ladies have met three times and each match went three sets with the heavy hitting Keys coming out the winner. Neither of these ladies gives two shits about the heat so that shouldn’t be a concern at all.
Mario Cilic vs Kei Nishikori
These two fellas have played each other 14 times. Wednesday makes #15 for these two and no better place to stage match #15 than in the Quarterfinals of the US Open. This will also be their fourth encounter at the US Open. Nishikori leads their series 8-6 and Cilic leads their US Open series 2-1. Cilic does his thing by hitting monster serves and even bigger forehands. Just like his coach Michael Chang did during his career Nishikori does his thing by counter punching and outlasting his opponents. If he can get to the miserable backhand of Cilic he stands more than a punchers chance of defeating Cilic. Cilic hopes to continue the dominant serving that led him to the Quarters and to finish points quickly with his forehand. Should be a fun match in the heat of the day!!
